Cycling through the countryside, I felt like I had discovered a hidden world, a secret passageway, as I followed the National Cycle Route 57 on my e-bike. This journey, a celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Camping and Caravanning Club (CCC), took me from Oxford to Surrey, retracing the footsteps of pioneers like Thomas Hiram Holding, who founded the CCC in 1901. What makes this trip particularly fascinating is the contrast between the past and present of camping. While motorhomes and glamping are now ubiquitous, the CCC, with its humble beginnings, still welcomes tents and promotes the health benefits of camping. In my opinion, this trip is a testament to the enduring appeal of camping and the evolution of outdoor adventures. From the Chilterns to the Thames, I witnessed the transformation of camping from a niche hobby to a mainstream activity, all while embracing the spirit of exploration and the joy of the journey. This journey is a reminder that the best adventures are still powered by pedals and curiosity, and that the CCC continues to play a vital role in preserving the camping experience for future generations.
